So You’re Writing a Novel, Eh?

November 1, 2008

I’ll always remember the chagrin when an old friend of mine discovered the ridiculously prolific sci-fi icon Isaac Asimov, author of more than five hundred books, once wrote a children’s piece with the inspired title So You’re Getting Braces. Whether or not this story is apocryphal, it still speaks to the capacity for productivity and genius (though Asimov hardly ever left New York, either…).

It is with these deep thoughts that I reflect on the beginning of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). Resisting even deeper questions (what “nation” are we talking about? and, for that matter, “what is a nation”?), I’ve decided to throw my hat (or keyboard) into the ring and have a go at it…

So what am I going to write about? I think I’ll use my recent academic paper on Wilhelm Reich and Orgone energy as inspiration. I’ve even got a working title — The Orgonocrats. Kind of like that classic bad joke, but weirder and in the future. This post has inspired me. Truly. Madly. Deeply. It has also tired me out.

Maybe I’ll start tomorrow…
